Comparisons and guides, each carrying its sources
We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specs, measure the pile height against your actual door clearance, read what owners report going wrong, and show you the live price - every claim sourced, every skip-this published. The arithmetic is on the page so you can check it.

Best Indoor Mat
The default indoor mat
8.8/10
Dense chenille on a thermoplastic rubber backing that the maker says is third-party tested for repeated wash-and-dry cycles - the failure point that kills most washable mats.

Best Dirt Trapper
The commercial-grade option
8.9/10
The domestic version of the mat that has been in commercial lobbies for decades: published 3/8-inch construction, 24 oz per square yard PET, and made in the USA.

Best Absorbent Mat
Fastest drying turnaround
8.7/10
The only mat here that publishes a measurable absorbency figure - 3000 GSM - instead of a marketing multiple, and it dries fast enough to be usable twice in a day.
Best Outdoor Mat
Scraping dried mud
8.0/10
Stiff coconut fiber at a published one-inch thickness - the best mechanical scraper on this list and, at that thickness, an outdoor-only mat by definition.

Best Mudroom Mat
The default indoor mat
8.8/10
Dense chenille on a thermoplastic rubber backing that the maker says is third-party tested for repeated wash-and-dry cycles - the failure point that kills most washable mats.

Best Runner
A published thickness that still washes
8.5/10
The rare mat that publishes both numbers a buyer needs - 0.28 inches thick and up to six cups of water - and then goes in a washing machine anyway.

A boot passes through all four. One mat cannot do four jobs, which is why most households conclude that door mats do not work.
Stage 01 · Scrape and absorb
Coir, chenille and rubber compared on the two things that decide it: how it cleans, and whether your door clears it.
Stage 02 · The paw cut
Depth, density and drying time - the three specs that decide whether a mat holds a wet dog or just gets muddy.
Stage 03 · Contain
Wall depth and a ridged base decide whether a tray contains slush or just relocates the puddle.
Stage 04 · Store
Load rating, depth and whether damp shoes can dry - the three specs that separate a bench from a rack with a cushion.
Stage 05 · The method
The measurements and procedures behind the picks - door clearance, sizing, materials and cleaning, all sourced.
The three pages that make the case, and one that answers the question nobody else will.
Door Clearance Data
Published mat thicknesses against the real door undercut - the arithmetic nobody else prints.
The System
Scrape, absorb, contain, store - the four stages, and what each one can and cannot do.
Material Decision
The material table this category never publishes - scraping, absorbency, weather and cleaning, side by side.

Prices render from the retailer data layer or they do not render at all. You will never see a number here that we typed in and forgot to update.
Pile heights, GSM densities, load ratings, wall depths. Where a maker publishes nothing, we say so - and in this category that absence is usually the finding.
A comparison where everything wins is an advertisement. We name the product we would not buy, and why, on every page that ranks anything.
Pile height against your actual door gap. Mat length against a real stride. The math is on the page, so you can redo it and disagree.
