How much clearance is under a standard interior door?
Roughly half an inch to three-quarters of an inch above the finished floor. Where door undercuts serve as the HVAC return path the gap is sometimes taken to a full inch, and NFPA 80 caps a fire-rated door's undercut at three-quarters of an inch. How thick can a door mat be to fit under a door?
Under about 0.5 inches to be safe behind any inward-opening door, and under about 0.75 inches for most. A 1-inch coir or chenille mat fits behind neither, which is why deep mats belong past the door swing.
Will a thick mat compress enough to fit under my door?
No. The door bottom shoves the pile forward on every swing, the mat creeps, the leading edge wears and the door picks up a dirty line across the bottom rail. Compression is not clearance.
What is the best outdoor door mat material?
Coconut coir if the mess is dry and solid and the position is covered, because stiff fiber scrapes mechanically. Molded rubber if the position is fully exposed, because coir is organic and degrades when it stays wet. See coir vs chenille vs rubber.
Do I need both an indoor and an outdoor door mat?
For most households, yes, and it is the highest-value change available. The two mats do different jobs - the outdoor one scrapes solids off the tread, the indoor one absorbs the water left behind. One mat has to compromise on both.
What is the best door mat for muddy dog paws?

Do paw cleaning mats actually work?
For surface mud and water on the underside of the paw, yes - and length matters more than any other property. For mud packed between the pads, no. No mat applies pressure there; that needs water or a cloth.
How many dog mats do I need?
Two, if you have more than one dog or a wet climate. A saturated deep-pile mat takes hours to dry and absorbs almost nothing while damp, so a single mat leaves you unprotected for most of the day.
What size rug is best for an entryway?
Longer than it is wide, in the direction people walk. About 20 to 24 inches wide covers the walking line for a standard door; length is where the benefit is. A 60-inch runner intercepts two or three footfalls where an 18-inch doormat intercepts a partial step. See entryway mat sizing.
How do you clean a doormat?
By material. Chenille and microfiber: shake the grit out first, machine wash cold, no fabric softener, tumble dry low. Rubber: hose both sides and stand on edge to drain. Coir: shake, beat and vacuum only. Full procedures in how to clean a doormat.
Why can't you use fabric softener on a door mat?
It deposits a waxy film on the fiber. The mat looks unchanged and permanently loses a large part of its ability to absorb water. It is the most common invisible way a good mat gets ruined, and it is why Gorilla Grip's care label bans it outright.
Can you wash a coir doormat?
No. Coconut fiber is organic and prolonged wetting softens the bristles and loosens the woven backing. A washing machine returns it as a mat-shaped pile of loose fiber. See how to clean a coir doormat.
Why did my absorbent mat stop absorbing?
Usually one of two things: fabric softener has coated the fiber, or the mat is simply full of fine grit and needs a proper wash rather than replacing. A flattened pile on an intact backing is normally just a dirty mat.
What is a boot tray?
A shallow, waterproof tray with a raised perimeter wall that holds wet or muddy footwear and contains the meltwater, mud and salt running off it. Better trays add a ridged base so the soles sit above the collected water and the boots dry. See what is a boot tray.
Should a boot tray have drainage holes?
Not indoors - there is no away, and underneath the tray is your floor. What you actually want is a ridged base that keeps the sole above the collected water. Drainage belongs on a covered porch or in a garage.
How deep should a boot tray be?
About an inch for rain and damp; two inches for snow, slush and road salt. Published wall depths in this category run from 1.22 to 2 inches, and the deeper end is what copes on the worst day of the year.
Can wet shoes go in a closed shoe cabinet?
No. Closed storage seals moisture in with the shoes, and that is how a hallway starts to smell. Dry them in a tray or on an open shelf first. See open vs closed shoe storage.
Do shoe benches actually hold an adult's weight?
Only the ones with a published static load rating - 286 lb and 350 lb are the figures we found. A bench that publishes no rating should be treated as a shoe rack with a padded top until proven otherwise.
