A door mat and a boot tray look like the same product and are not. A mat absorbs, spreads and eventually saturates. A tray does not absorb anything: it contains. The water stays inside a raised wall until you pick the tray up and pour it out, and that is the entire value proposition.

The distinction becomes obvious the first winter you own both. Two pairs of snow boots carry a genuinely startling volume of meltwater, and a mat has nowhere to put it. Within an hour it is saturated and the water is running off the edges onto whatever floor the mat is sitting on. A tray with a two-inch wall holds it.

Two specifications, and only two

Wall depth is containment capacity, and it is the number that decides whether a tray works in a snow region. Published figures in our set run from 1.22 inches (IRIS) to a full 2 inches (Superio). That sounds like a small difference and it is not - it is nearly double the volume, and it is exactly the difference between a tray that copes on the worst day of the year and a tray that overflows on it.

A ridged base is the difference between drying and soaking. A boot sitting flat in a shallow pool of its own meltwater does not dry overnight - it sits in the water and is still wet in the morning, which is how boots start to smell and how leather goes stiff. Ridges hold the sole above the water line so the boot dries while the water pools underneath. Kempf specifies this explicitly; several cheaper trays are simply flat, and a flat tray is a puddle with a wall around it.

Weight is a feature

Almost nobody thinks about this before buying and everybody notices it afterward. Getting a wet boot off involves levering against it with the other foot, and that force goes sideways into whatever the boot is standing on. A lightweight plastic tray slides across a hard floor and tips its contents out. A heavy recycled-rubber tray stays where you put it.

That is the honest case for rubber over plastic in this category, and it is also why plastic trays work better in multi-packs than as a single long tray - a small tray you lift with one hand to empty is a genuinely different tool from a large one you have to carry with two.

Where a tray stops being the answer

Capacity is the wall you hit. A 16 by 32 inch tray takes two adult pairs. A four-person household in a snow region needs two trays, or a longer one, or - and this is usually the real answer - a bench with storage underneath, because at that point the household also needs somewhere to sit while four pairs of boots come off. The other limit is drying speed in a cold hallway. Contained water does not evaporate quickly at fifty degrees, so a tray left un-emptied stays a small indoor pond. Tip it out. If you can put the tray near an outside door, tip it onto the step; if not, it is a two-hand carry to a sink and the rubber will flex, so do it before it is full.

One thing a tray does exceptionally well that nobody advertises: it stops road salt. Salt is what actually damages a finished floor and corrodes the underside of a boot, and a tray keeps the salt residue in one wipeable place instead of distributing it across a hallway. Is a boot tray better than a mat?
